This is a collection of all sources for Buckner records in the 17th century in America that are known to me, comprising over 90 individual records. 13 or possibly 14 distinct names are known, probably representing 15 or 16 distinct individuals, out of whom at least 4 were clearly immigrants. I have tried to cite either primary source transcriptions or transcriptions of primary sources quoted in secondary sources. Hugh "Donding" (prob. (from Richard Hakluyt, The principal navigations, voyages, traffiques, and discoveries of the English nation, unpublished, ca. 1599) 27 Feb 1649 - John Buckerin - headright of Richard Croshaw - the reading is clear and unambiguous, but keep this in mind since Richard Croshaw of London (d. 1631) was a close friend of Thomas Buckner the Mercer and knew Leonard Bucknor of London. This could be an original miscopying similar to the "John Bucknell" of the 1662 Lee patent. (Polly Cary Mason, Records of Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia: A Collection of Abstracts, (Genealogical Publishing Com, 2009), p. 22, from VPLG Bk. 2 p. 202 - reading confirmed from original image) 10 Feb 1654/5 - John Buckner - John Buckner witnessed a mortgage by Abraham Moone in Lancaster County, VA (Beverley Fleet, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Genealogical Publishing, 2006, Vol 10, p. 103 - from Lanc. Co. Record Book No. 2, p. 15) 1657 - William Buckner - William Buckner claimed as headright by Howell Price ("Pryse"), Charles City Co., VA (B. (Jul., 1874), pp. 13-18.) 23 Dec 1662 - John Buckner - "Jno Bucknell" and "Tho Roueston" headrights of Robert Lee for patent in Gloucester Co. VA (LVA, Land Office Patents No. 5 (Original), p. 333) - This is a problematic reference. The headright list is very similar to the first 8 names on 12 Oct 1669 list used by John Buckner and Thomas Royston, suggesting that Lee had used a corrupted version of the same list 7 years earlier. The Bucknell reading is correct, but it seems likely that it was miscopied from a no longer extant original list. 11 Apr 1663 - John Buckner - land in Stafford divided between Hugh Dowding and John Buckner, in tenure of son William Buckner 12 Dec 1694 (Gertrude Entz Gray, Virginia Northern Neck land grants, Genealogical Publishing Com, 1993, vol. 1, p. 8, from Northern Neck Grants Book 2-96) 23 May 1663 - Gerard Buckner - Accomack Co. [Note: this was later regranted to John Smith in 1684 after L. Smith and A. Buckner deserted it - the tract is adjacent to the tract of John Buckner and T. Royston that was used to lay out Fredericksburg)] Sep 1673 - Andrew Buckner - "There is on record in Essex a power of attorney, dated September, 1673, from William Thornton, of Gloucester, to James Kay, of Rappahannock county, concerning 2,000 acres of land in the freshes of Rappahannock, on the north side of the river, adjoining the lands of Andrew Buckner, Col. The "Bickner" readings are clear, but since the name is virtually unknown in this context this could be an original mistranscription of Richard and John Buckner. It's notable that John Vickers was also a headright in this group, and he was likely Thomas Vicars' son. It's possible that Vicars and the Buckner brothers were returning from schooling in England, or maybe it's just part of some headright fraud. (LVA, Land Office Patents No. 6, 1666-1679 (pt.1 & 2 p.1-692), p. 546 (Reel 6)) 14 Mar 1676 - Anthony Buckner - signatory to petition of grievances from Stafford Co. VA (F.A.
