Betham's Abstract of the will of John Bucknor of Limerick, goldsmith, IRE, 1670/1 As with most early Irish wills, this one was probably lost in the 1922 Four Courts fire, but a brief abstract has survived. This is John Bucknor who was an early Limerick goldsmith. The will abstract is not very informative, but it does provide the only evidence for John's wife's name and the name of his elder son. One of the two other children is Mary who married Edward Croker and the other is probably Richard Bucknor, as mentioned in the 1700 will of John's brother William. Through Richard, John is likely the ancestor of most of the later Buckners in Limerick. "[le?]sthe John" is unclear in the manuscript, but I think it might be some variant spelling of "lathe" and that the will may have left John's lathe (a piece of capital equipment) to his son John. Mr. Hartstongue may have been a friend or attorney. The Hartstonges were a prominent Anglo-Irish family, and I suspect this was the judge and attorney Sir Standish Hartstonge, who was Recorder of Limerick at one time. It is probable that this John Bucknor is identical to the John "Backner" who was listed as one of the sheriffs of Limerick in 1666.
